Internal Control Tip of Week – Make Time for After-Action-Reviews

By Thomas Canby posted 04-27-2017 07:44

After-Action-Reviews (AARs) are a useful method to identify best practices and opportunities for improvement relating to the quality, efficiency, effectiveness and timeliness of programs, services and activities. All managers in school districts need to make it a priority to set aside time for periodic AARs with personnel from each business, finance or operational unit they oversee in their respective departments or offices. It is helpful if the scheduled AARs align with monthly, quarterly and annual work cycles for various tasks, activities or projects in each unit.  The AAR should encourage everyone in the work unit to contribute to discussions, analysis of any student/employee/participant survey results, and group activities to highlight strengths and opportunities for improvements, in addition to scheduling next step projects to act on insights to improve processes, procedures, workflows and documentation, in addition to key internal controls. After each AAR, managers should also step back and make an assessment of whether they should pursue external mentoring resources and/or management reviews to accelerate the implementation of improvements and best practices.
