At an almost undetectable pace, the culture of an organization changes every day. Immersed in the organization’s culture, employees are not likely to observe the continual slow changes that led to present circumstances. The charge for effective leaders is to set a positive example every day, also referred to as “the tone at the top” that is a core component of the internal control system. Leaders need to routinely communicate their expectations relating to ethics and compliance with laws and regulations, in addition to reinforcing the organization’s expectations in employees’ job description. Consult with the school district’s attorney as a proactive measure in developing talking points in periodic communications, and to strengthen the language in employees’ job descriptions and the school district’s administrative policies. When issues happen, having continually nurtured the right culture will help minimize the degree of negative consequences and level of effort to address any issue of the day.
