Internal Control Tip of Week – Avoid Being Overconfident

One of the top internal control recommendations is to “Never sign something you don’t understand.” This is followed by “Don’t be overconfident in your understanding of what you are about to sign.” These kinds of innocent oversights are assured, in many instances, to be associated with signing away the district’s most effective recourse related to various degrees of potential unsatisfactory performance by a vendor. Most vendors are not going to walk away from doing business with your school district if your district’s attorney modifies the vendor’s proposed terms and conditions.
