TEA has opened the online application for the New Instructional Facilities Allotment (NIFA) program and the deadline for applications is September 17. NIFA exists to provide school districts additional operations funding to assist with the costs of opening a new school (furniture, equipment, etc.). The allotment is available to school districts and charter schools that construct, repurpose or lease a new campus. In the initial year, LEAs can receive up to $1,000 per ADA on a new campus through the foundation school program. In the second year of operation, LEAs can receive up to $1,000 per additional student on the new campus (in other words, second year funding is available to support growth in ADA between year one and year two). If your LEA opened a campus for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year and forgot to apply, you can apply this year using a one-year application. Be aware that, while districts are allowed up to $1,000 per student in a new campus, the program is limited by appropriations. This year, there were sufficient appropriations for an allotment of $235.
