TEA Correspondence: Federal Violence Prevention Grant and School Bus Accident Reporting

By Amanda Brownson posted 06-27-2018 07:52

TEA posted two items yesterday that may be of interest.

First, the US Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) have announced a grant intended to improve efforts to reduce violent crime through the creation of school safety training and mental health programs for school personnel and students.  Applications are due July 23, 2018.  The grant overview states that the program is designed to address:

  • Training school personnel and educating students to prevent student violence;
  • Development and operation of anonymous reporting systems concerning threats of school violence, including mobile phone applications, hotlines, and websites; and
  • Development and operation of school threat assessment and crisis intervention teams that may include coordination with law enforcement agencies and school personnel.

Here are links to the TEA Correspondence, additional information about the grant on the TEA website, and the grant announcement on the BJA website.  The BJA indicates it has a total of $26 million nation-wide to award to states and units of local government.  It appears that this will allow it to make awards to 14 states and 50 units of local government.

Second, the TEA division of school funding announced yesterday that the Bus Accident Reporting System is open, and responses from school districts and charter schools are due August 31.  You can access the survey and preview the survey questions here.
